I am new(er) to the whole tournament thing. I have only played in a couple pretty low-key ones. For me, I am not that concerned about my opponent's army. I play a pretty soft list, and I pretty much have a good time whether my knights are breaking opponents on the charge or my peasants all drop their halberds and flee the table at the first sight of bloodshed (the latter happens more than the former). What DOES ruin the game for me is when my opponent starts berating me, my list, my army choice, etc because as an above-poster said he thinks having 4 stegadons makes him a "tactical genius"...great comment by the way: cracked me up.
So long as my opponent can spank me all over the table with class I have no problem with it. Obviously it isn't fun constantly playing OTT lists, but as a soft-list Bret player I have gotten used to getting smacked around. I chose to play not only a 6th edition army...but a soft list at that...I do it because I like the way my army looks and plays. Plus I would feel like an a$$ if I lined up 8 lances of knights across the table from my opponent. Some people want to win that badly; it isn't as important to me as just having a good time. Playing a soft list DOES make victory that much sweeter when you pull off an upset...which I have done a couple times.
I probably will not be at the tournament on Feb 21...I really hate playing an army that isn't fully painted, and my tournament list is not fully painted yet (hence why I have been playing in lower key tourneys)...but if I were to come my list is pretty soft...it's WPS score is around 4100 I believe.

Well the tournament came and went with 13 players. I think that for Mike's (not this Mike) first Fantasy tournament I have been too, it went fairly well.
Does anyone recall when the next one is in April? I can't remember which Saturday it falls on.

I think it should be April 17th - I remember him saying he wanted to do the third Saturday.
As for a tougher list - I like the idea of someone with a 'soft' list kicking butt - that to me helps to keep some of the cheese in line! It truly shows that it isn't the list, it is the player who wins. Congrats on the win yesterday Mike!

The only problem with that approach is that it can only work against returning players; it does nothing to prevent new players from fielding broken lists. That's the problem I have with any tournament that takes a "wait and see" approach; it may fix whatever problems you have amongst your core group, say 75% of your players, but the 25% one-timers and first-timers don't have any past experience with that particular venue to build on, so they're more likely to bring an OTT list (if they're the type of person who would do so in the first place.)

Exactly my concern. I tried to appeal to the organizer. Even a WPS cutoff of 5 would have done the trick. It would keep the stupid stuff out of the event, while making sure people can field the lists they want without fearing a rock-paper-scissors effect.

I think I would rather like to see an objective set of hard rules to govern comp rather than wps. Something in the vein of 'no double rares, no triplicate specials' etc.
Does anyone know if Mike has posted the tournament results and where yet? I've checked marauders and Krystal keep forums, but couldn't turn anything up. I am really curious to see where I landed of the 13 participants.

Mike was supposed to post the results at the front of the store where the sign up sheet was. Not sure when he'll post it.

Mike said he would post it on the original thread that announced the tournament too, but I dunno which one that it. Relax girls, you're both pretty.
I'd also like to see some sort of guideline for comp; a WPS cutoff, magic dice restriction, large target restriction, etc. I'd also like to see a ban on special characters.
If I can make it to the April list I plan to include both Valkia and Wulfrik in my lists, if for no other reason than to illustrate the effectiveness of certain troop/character combos. The problem is I'm having trouble reconciling that idea with my conscience; would I be doing it to call attention to the potential for broken/OTT lists (of which there were no examples of on Sunday that I was aware of) or just because I can and want to win lol?

I am wrestling with the same thing. There were no OTT lists... some tough lists, but IMO nothing OTT.
But it can happen. Should I come to the event with two lists? I don't know.

I know; I'd like to bring an OTT list to illustrate how they have the potential to wreck tournaments...thereby being responsible for potentially wrecking the tournament lol.
On a related note, I am very heavily in favor of open lists. It would be pretty easy for many armies to tailor their daemonic gifts, bloodline powers, or Slann abilities to suit whatever matchup they were facing on any particular round. There were a couple newer and limited-experience players yesterday who probably wouldn't know these types of powers by name, so without a pre-game explanation of what they do they run the risk of playing their game at a significant disadvantage to more experienced player.
I'm also anxious to see the tournament results and how everyone did, so hopefully Mike can find the time to post soon.

None of the armies I played were OTT or at least weren't what I consider to be anyways. I would like to see some kind of comp restriction or comp scores and probably no special characters though. Though if everyone else is bringing an OTT list to the next tourny I'll have to bring the big guns with my Ogres... no clue what that would be!

That is the issue... I would rather not field a broken list. But I am fearful that a broken list may get in next time and ruin the tournament. By being that guy that I dispise, it starts spiralling out of control.... plus there is no guarentee that he will fix the event anyways.
I really doubt I would field something broken for the next event.. Easy to vent, but I don't like feeling dirty.
